Cecotropes are soft, mucous-covered fecal pellets produced by some animals, such as rabbits and rodents, which are ingested directly from the anus to aid in the digestion of cellulose and other nutrients. They are typically expelled and consumed by the animal in a process called cecotrophy or coprophagy. Cecotropes contain essential nutrients, including vitamins and proteins, that were not fully digested during the initial passage through the digestive tract.
