In animals, in vitro fertilization (IVF) refers to the process of fertilizing an egg outside of the animal's body in a laboratory setting. It involves the collection of eggs from a female animal and sperm from a male animal, which are then combined in a petri dish or test tube. The fertilized eggs, or embryos, are cultured in a controlled environment until they reach a stage where they can be transferred back into the female's reproductive tract or surrogate for further development and implantation. IVF is a reproductive technology commonly used in animal breeding programs to produce offspring with desirable traits or to assist in preserving endangered species.
