The curved, muscular, saclike structure that is an enlargement of the alimentary canal and lies between the esophagus and the small intestine. There are two types of stomach, one in simple-stomached, non-ruminant animals and one in ruminants, which have four stomach compartments: the rumen, reticulum, omasum and abomasum. The latter is the only true gastric stomach and corresponds to the stomach of non-ruminants.
