Net energy for maintenance (NEm) is defined as the energy used to sustain an animal that is neither gaining nor losing weight in a post-absorptive state, in a thermoneutral environment, at rest, and in sexual repose. Usually, we assume that maintenance is the animal's top priority for the use of energy and nutrients. In a positive energy balance, all NEm is lost as heat, and is difficult to separate from other dietary sources of heat.
