The longissimus (Latin for "the longest one") is the muscle lateral to the semispinalis muscles. The longissimus muscle is a collection of three separate muscles that run up nearly the entire length of the spinal column, from the lower back up to the neck. These three muscles include the longissimus capitis, longissimus cervicis, and longissimus thoracis.
